This is the backstory to the birth of BOOMERS 'R HEROES. The support group's name was derived from this.
My dear husband, Roy, took ill in May, 2006 with a vicious urinary tract infection. For a healthy person, it wouldn't be a big deal, for Roy, as he was a kidney transplant recipient on anti-rejection medications to keep the kidney, he had no defenses to fight the infection. He fought through 32 months against this brutal sepsis, totally dumbfounding his doctors as they didn't think he'd make it beyond 3 months, but they had no idea how much he wanted to live. As he was shuttled back and forth between hospitals and nursing facitlies, he proved time and again how strong his faith was. We grew stronger as a couple and fell in love all over again as he needed me and I needed him to make it through this horrendous trial. There was a poem I wrote to encourage us and made sure that the caregiving staff wherever he was residing read it as it was a tribute to their care as well. My Roy finally went on to a well-deserved rest in God's arms on January 22, 2009. I miss him terribly and always will.
It reads as follows:
YOU ARE MY HERO
Dear Roy, You must keep fighting the Good Fight, continuing to press on through this test of faith.
I am so very proud of you and thrilled with the monumental progress you have made.
Having surmounted all odds and, with God's unchanging hand,
you continue to move forward in the healing of your body and spirit.
Most importantly, you have kept the faith knowing that God is with you always.
The Lord has been working his miracles through the hands of the doctors,
nurses and techs to heal your body and tend to your spirit.
God continues to answer your prayers and those of your friends and loved ones.
He will never desert you in your hour of need.
Keep fighting the Good Fight, My Love.
I love you with all that I am. Easy as Pie, Simple as that!
