BOOMERS 'R HEROES' founder, Jean Kirkley, was interviewed by Sis. Stephanie DaCosta, Director Community Relations, Bethel Deliverance International Church. It took place on Wednesday, February 20th on WNAP 1110 AM, Gospel Highway. It was a great experience, an opportunity of a lifetime and what a blessing Sis. DaCosta has been for Boomers 'R Heroes. She has guided me through the Bethel Enlighten Program Workshop in October and November 2012, an ADA Health Fair and Sr. Craft Fair in November at Bethel and, finally, this radio interview. We've been touched by an angel.
The interview itself was wonderful and went flawlessly. My feedback by friends and family was that it was very good, comprehensive and I sounded like a natural on the radio. I was so elated to hear such positive feedback. I was also asked to return to do another interview with Radio Robyn at that station and we're in the process of getting that scheduled at this writing. Keep your ears to airwaves....you never know where we're gonna show up.
On Saturday, 12/1, we were represented as a jewelry vendor, Jeannie Beadies, at the Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament at 63rd & Callowhill 12-4 pm. It was a great afternoon for networking with other folks who are crafters of all ilks. Thank you OLOBS and Ken Wilson who referred me to this opportunity to the get the word out about Jeannie Beadies which is the fundraising end of the Boomers 'r Heroes.
Thank you, one and all.
Wow...it's Thanksgiving Day. Can you believe it???? It's been a year of ups and downs but with understanding there was growth. Boomers 'R Heroes is growing and is getting to be known in more areas of Philadelphia. Please keep telling your friends, family, church members and anyone you come into contact with about our group and how it helps you. We need to spread the word, a good word, about a place where caregivers and meet, greet and get some help.
Thank you for your love and support.
Dear Friends & Family,
Cuz Cordie called me today with the best news and she sounded so excited and so healthy. She said that her doctor came into the office with a big smile (imagine that) and told her that her numbers (??) changed from 15,000 to 700. She didn't even ask to explain what that means except to know that she is beating the odds and is getting stronger from her chemo treatments. She's in her 4th round of a circuit and feeling well, and especially with this outstanding news, making plans for some stuff she needs to do next year...our prayers are being answered for Cordie and we ask that the prayers continue to lifted for her and for all those sick and shut-ins. There's nothing that God can't do.
Boomers ‘R Heroes Celebrated our First Anniversary with a Fundraiser Party. I hosted the Gold Party Girl, Mary Kay and my Jeannie Beadies as fundraising consultants on Saturday, September 8th at my mom’s home. It started out as a small buzz in my head that I have to raise some funds as my money ran out before the month and it was getting hard to keep things afloat. This is as “non-profit” as anything can possibly get and the finances are stressing me out. Soooooooo, I found a way to raise some money. First, last year, I started making jewelry after I’d broken a bracelet and redesigned it and found that I had a knack for it. With the development of Jeannie Beadies and the advice of my sister, Michele, I was encouraged to continue moving forward with designing my beaded ID Blings, Bracelets, and Earrings. In August I started making match Necklaces to complete the sets. I made so much stuff, but unless I sell them, I’m not making money. My sisters Karlyn and Michele have been loyal patrons and I cannot thank them enough for their encouragement, but I needed to do more, so the fundraising idea came to mind. I had connected with Toni Hackett, my Mary Kay Beauty Consultant and she was on a 50 faces in 50 days challenge. We talked about doing something together but I felt we needed another vendor so I searched the internet for a gold buyer in the area as I know that Gold Parties are very productive. I found the Gold Party Girl and with finding her we settled on the date and time and off we went.
We had a good turnout of 12 guests who brought their gold with them, received a check from The Gold Party Girl, had a beauty consultation/purchases from Mary Kay and purchased some Jeannie Beadies jewelry, Boomers 'R Heroes' fundraising jewelry line. It was a success and a good time was had by everyone. I’m so happy that I followed through on this party as my family & friends are stepping up to contribute. Beyond the actual attendees, I received a donation from my aunt Pat and a promised from two other friends to make donations, and/or buy some jewelry in support of this fundraising effort.
My heartfelt thanks to everyone for your support and love.

As a volunteer with the National Kidney Foundation, I am covering the table for their information at the Mt. Airy Church of God in Christ on Saturday, June 30 from 9-12n. Please come out to support the efforts at Mt. Airy COGIC to raise health issue awareness in our community.
My hat's off to Alice and Rudy, two Heroes who shared their stories during a roundtable discussion for the National Family Caregivers Association (NFCA; www.thefamilycaregiver.org) and Forest Labs on a project for Alzheimer’s disease caregivers. NFCA is a non-profit organization that provides education and support to the more than 65 million Americans who care for a loved one with a chronic illness, disability, or the frailties of old age. As a group, we had a great showing of 2 members , 50% of the group, and this says a lot for how we're doing in Philadelphia....yaaaaay us!!!
Rudy, introduced to me by Kathy & Chucky, came to the session after having only talked with me over the phone, was willing to share his story about his dear mom's illness and what a story. That's a Hero.
Alice attended our first meeting at North Penn Baptist Church on 4/19, and recognizing that she had a story to tell that would possibly help someone else through these muddied waters of caring for an Alzheimer's patient decided to participate and did an outstanding job of expressing herself and contributing to the discussion, as well. That's a Hero.
Both Alice and Rudy had some great information to share as they exchanged and conversed with the Haggertys were very animated and emotionally charged. Thank you both for your enthusiasm and encouraging demeanor.
Silverstone Bed & Breakfast in Chestnut Hill (www.silverstonestay.com) hosted the video session and everyone involved had a great time. We also met two other caregivers, the Haggertys, who participated with their experiences and lessons learned.
As a group leader, I am very pleased that we were contacted and invited to participate in this program.
