Dear Heroes, It gives me great pride to report that the second Heroes meeting was a success. Inner Journeys Center owners, Shelia Quarles and Kathy Morris were our guest speakers and participated in our support group. Marianne, Estelle, Kathy Sutton, Charles Sutton, Sheila and Kathy Morris were in attendance. We opened with a personal introduction and some interesting factoid about ourselves. Estelle was first to speak and she was speaking of her admiration for Kathy S. who suggested that we give our impressions of each other, which gave us an interesting aspect. We found that we have a mutual admiration for Kathy S., my oldest sister-friend and fellow mischief- maker- from- way- back-when. Kathy mentioned her admiration for Estelle's healthy lifestyle as an exercise guru along with her Social Work, caregiver roles and maintaining such a youthful look at her age. We were all in agreement. Sheila introduced her natural, self-healing program and Kathy M. Marianne was supportive of Boomers' group efforts. We shared some life experiences which helped us to understand what we were feeling at this time in our lives. Sheila addressed the group with an overview of what Inner Journeys offers: natural, self-healing systems, music for stress relief, natural supplements for natural health attunement and stones/salts/lamps which bring balance to your body. She described a therapy she utilized to encourage her own recovery from what was diagnosed as "a life-time brain injury with diminished capacity". Everyone was fascinated, receptive and open to what was offered. We were introduced to some stones and crystals with healing properties. I personally own an Ionic Crystal Salt Lamp which has very soothing properties. Kathy S. was interested in getting some Lotus Tea which I also requested. I credit Inner Journeys as an essential part of bringing BOOMERS 'R HEROES to life. They helped me to focus beyond my fears and reach out to people who need support while tackling the caregiver issues they currently face. Estelle shared a business venture with us - she's hosting an exercise class at the YMCA of Germantown beginning September 15, 2011 and she has proposed a class with Mt. Airy Learning Tree to teach a Seniors Exercise Program which has been accepted by MALT for the winter session. Go Estelle. I'm happy for you. Kathy S. emphasized the idea that BOOMERS is a great platform to offer Assistance Resources to its members and community. You will notice that a new page has been added where resources will be added just for that purpose. Thank you Kathy S. Marianne brought up the subject of Alzheimer’s and asked what the ratio was of men to women who are stricken with this disease. It was a great question and I'm seeking an answer for that. At the time, I had some information to distribute to interested parties: Caregivers and the Early Stages of Alzheimer’s Disease by Peter Ganther and Alzheimer's: Altered Perceptions by Dorothy Womack, (see attached documents below). This information will address some questions about the onset of the disease and how it affects the family. Before we broke up I offered an FDI pharmacy discount card to everyone who has a need for prescriptions. Any help that will save us money is appreciated by all. Our group is growing illustrating that there is a need for the BOOMERS 'R HEROES support group. Thank you Kathy & Chucky for your encouragement, support and offering your business office for our meetings. You are my HEROES. Respectfully Yours, Jean Kirkley, Founder BOOMERS ‘R HEROES ![]()
